Whey Protein vs Whey Isolate: What's the Difference?
Share
Walk down any protein aisle and you'll see two labels that look almost identical: whey and whey isolate. The price difference is real, the difference in results usually isn't. Here's how to tell them apart and which one suits you.
What's the Actual Difference?
Both come from milk and are complete proteins, meaning they contain all the essential amino acids. The difference is how much processing they go through.
- Whey concentrate — the standard form. Typically around 70–80% protein by weight, with some lactose and fat left in.
- Whey isolate — filtered further to remove most of the fat and lactose. Typically 90% protein or more by weight, so a scoop gives you slightly more protein for slightly fewer carbs and calories.
Exact figures vary between products, so always check the label.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose concentrate if you want the best value and tolerate dairy well. For most people hitting a daily protein target, it does the job and costs less per serving.
Choose isolate if you're watching calories or carbs closely, you find regular whey heavy on your stomach, or you simply prefer a lighter shake. Isolate contains much less lactose, but it isn't lactose-free and isn't suitable for a milk allergy, so check the label and speak to your GP if you're unsure.
What About Clear Whey?
Clear whey is a type of isolate processed to mix into a light, juice-style drink rather than a thick shake. It's a good option if you don't like creamy shakes, especially in warm weather or after a hard session.
How to Compare Products Properly
- Protein per serving, not per tub. Serving sizes differ, so compare grams of protein in a scoop.
- Price per 25g of protein. This is a fairer comparison than price per kilo.
- Flavour and mixability. The best protein is the one you'll actually drink consistently.
The Bottom Line
Your total daily protein, your training and your consistency matter far more than concentrate versus isolate. Pick the one that fits your budget, your stomach and your taste, then get on with training.
