Plant-Based vs Whey Protein: Which Should You Choose?

"Plant protein doesn't build muscle" is one of the most repeated myths in the gym. The reality is more nuanced, and for plenty of people a plant-based protein is the better choice. Here's how the two compare.

Amino Acids: The Honest Comparison

Whey is a complete protein with a high proportion of leucine, the amino acid most linked to triggering muscle protein synthesis. Single plant sources can be lower in one or more essential amino acids, which is why good plant proteins combine sources such as pea, rice and soya to cover the gaps.

Research generally finds that when total protein intake and training are matched, plant-based blends can support muscle gain in a similar way to whey, though results vary between studies. A slightly larger serving can help close any leucine gap.

Digestion and Dietary Needs

  • Whey is dairy-based. If you're sensitive to lactose or avoid dairy, a plant blend is the easier route.
  • Plant blends are dairy-free and suit vegan diets, but check allergens, as many contain soya.

Taste, Texture and Price

Whey tends to mix smoother and taste creamier. Plant proteins can be slightly thicker or earthier, though good blends have closed the gap. Prices are comparable, with plant blends sometimes costing a little more per serving.

How to Choose

  • Vegan or dairy-free? Go plant-based and look for a blend with more than one protein source.
  • Tolerate dairy and want value and mixability? Whey is hard to beat.
  • Can't decide? Keep one of each. Many people use whey after training and a plant blend at other times.

The Bottom Line

Hit your daily protein target, train consistently and pick a protein you enjoy. The type matters less than the habit.
